FAQs

Got questions about scalp micropigmentation? We’ve got answers! Whether you’re curious about the process, results, or aftercare, our FAQ section is here to provide you with all the information you need. Learn how SMP can help you restore the appearance of a full head of hair, boost your confidence, and achieve natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Who can use SMP?

Anyone suffering from hair loss can benefit from SMP, including those with androgenetic alopecia, scarring, burns, or birthmarks. SMP works for all ages, skin types, and skin colors. If the client’s hair is thinning or their hairline is receding, SMP will restore their hairline and thicken the appearance of their hair.

How many sessions are required?

A full SMP procedure requires up to 4 sessions, each lasting 2 to 4 hours. In the first session, the technician will draw and establish the client’s hairline and perform the first layer of density of dots into the scalp. In subsequent sessions, the technician will add dots to thicken the appearance of the implanted “hair follicles.” This is known as adding density.

What is the difference between SMP and tattoo?

The biggest difference is the depth at which the pigment is applied. In SMP, we work on the upper layer of the dermis and don’t go deeper than that. Additionally, different pigments are used—organic, carbon-based, hypoallergenic, and certified safe for use on the skin.

Will the dots change color or turn blue?

SMP pigments do not turn blue. However, over time, the pigment may fade from its original color to a lighter shade.

What is the Norwood Scale?

Male pattern baldness is measured using the Hamilton-Norwood scale, more commonly known as the Norwood Scale. This measure was invented in the 1950s by James Hamilton and updated in the 1970s by O’tar Norwood. Pricing is based on the client’s Norwood Scale rating, as higher ratings require more time from the technician.

Pre-care instructions

Proper preparation is key to achieving the best results from your procedure. Follow these pre-care instructions to ensure your skin is ready and the pigment absorbs effectively.

  • Wash your scalp with a non-abrasive, gentle shampoo a week prior to your procedure.
  • After washing the scalp, moisturize the skin with some form of organic skin moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated. This will allow the pigment to be properly absorbed.
  • Avoid any sunlight that would cause burning or peeling of your skin.
  • Do not use sun tanning oil.
  • Focus on relaxing and getting a good night’s rest the night before your procedure.
  • Eat a hearty and healthy meal before your procedure.
  • If you are extremely sensitive to pain, seek medical advice prior to the procedure.
  • You may bring a clean hat or scarf to loosely cover your head after the treatment if so desired, but it is not recommended. For best results, leave the scalp uncovered.
  • Please ask your artist about the proper hair length for the day of the scheduled procedure.
  • Do not use a razor on your scalp within 24 hours of the scheduled procedure. It is critical that we see native hair in order to properly blend the hair follicles.
